With reference to the Earl of Crewe's

29724 despatch No.207 of the 15th of September, 1909, and

subsequent correspondence on the subject of King Edward

VII Scholarships tenable at the University of Hong Kong,

I have the honour to inform you that as it has not

proved possible to carry out in their entirety the

proposals which were forwarded as enclosure 3 of the late

13366.

4 Sir F.H. May's despatch No.87 of 19th March, 1914, the

new funds of the scheme, which are held in the Colonial

Treasury, now shew a credit balance of $12,560 including

accrued interest.

It has now been proposed to make use of

these credit balances to increase the number of scholar-

ships granted from the year 1935 onwards in such a manner

that for the years 1935 to 1946 inclusive the number of

scholars will be above the normal.

I enclose two tables prepared by the

University Accountants shewing the details of the scheme

which must, however, be regarded as subject to modifica-

tion by two unknown factors, namely, the rate of exchange

and the Faculties in which the students holding scholar-

ships are entered, the Medical Faculty having a six
